INDIANAPOLIS – C.J. Anderson came into the season with a chip on his shoulder about being an afterthought in the Peyton Manning offense.
Of course, it turned out the man who turned in a Pro Bowl season in 2013, just two years after a seventh-place finish in the NFL MVP voting, was still the forgotten man in a room full of quarterbacks.
The 25-year-old Anderson had only one of his three touchdowns in the Colts’ 45-44 win over the Chargers. He also made a touchdown catch but drew only two targets and had to throw a 16-yard touchdown pass on the sideline.
But the biggest thing that came out of the game for the running back was that he’s looking like a guy capable of breaking out of a stagnant offense.
Anderson finished with 127 yards on 19 carries and finished the game ranked seventh in the NFL with 5.0 yards per carry.
He forced the Colts to abandon the run (they ran it only 15 times for 34 yards), and Anderson’s contributions on the ground against the Chargers were a big reason why Indianapolis hung on to win.
“I think they got a little bit scared of me,” Anderson said with a smile. “I think they saw that I can run the ball and I could bust a run.
“I’m happy.”
